Synthetic Longsword Type II:  We are now introducing our next in line for our synthetic series of swords.  We designed the Type II longsword to have similar flex features as a real steel longsword, but with the added safety and balance of a training sword.   Protective gear is required to use the weapon.  Consult your instructor or safety official before using this weapon. Use at your own risk.

Some of the exclusive enhancements to this product include:

  • Custom grey color looks and feels more professional than white.

  • Steel scent stopper pommel pulls the COB near the guard.

  • Strong crossguard that will last a long time and stay strong on the sword. The shoulder design invented by Purpleheart Armoury and used in our wooden wasters for over 10 years is in this design to keep the the guard seated on the guard.

  • Strong polymer grip that provide superior grip with a leather feel to it.  The cushioned grip reduces vibration on the blade and your hands for greater blade sensitivity.

Here is the DC Dueling Club putting them to the test.

What is the main difference between the synthetic and wood, in terms of intended use? Which has better/worse handling characteristics (when compared to steel), ‘feel’ (e.g. on impact or in the bind), etc.?

Certainly knights, legionnaires, samurai and everyone in-between have been using wood for over 2000 years.  So it clearly is an excellent choice in martial training for most people and has trained more people for battle than any other system.  We came out with the synthetic line exclusively for for people who train with a bit more blade contact and repetitive contact drills than others.  The synthetics also do absorb some of the blade contact similar to steel.  Both in flex and material characteristics and reportedly binding is better than the wood. Since the wood may bounce the blades a bit more.

What is the difference in durability?

The synthetic requires minimal maintenance.  While we have wasters over 10 years old with zero maintenance done to them, I think the synthetics are more resistant to neglect.

Review from Bill Grandy shown in this video....

...the swords have been holding up very well. I haven't really used them much against other swords, as they are currently the only synthetic swords at VAF, but this past weekend at the Mid-Atlantic HEMA Gathering they faced a couple of other synthetics without any issues. I think the other swords may have been the "With Intent Wasters", but I'm not totally sure about it. People were impressed with your swords over the other ones. The other ones didn't balance as nicely, and they had a certain wobbliness in the bind that your swords don't have....

Well, thanks! I have to say, I preferred these to those other nylon wasters; they have much more presence. - B.R. Washington
